Neve woke up to the sound of beeping. She was hooked up to various machines. She was also on oxygen and there was even a drip in her arm. She was glad she’d been asleep for that; she wasn’t good with needles.

Her head swam with questions. Where was Will? Had something happened to him? Was he all right? And what about the baby? Was that why she was here?

A health care assistant came in to take her obs.

“The doctor wanted to see you”, she said, “I’ll send him in”.

The doctor must have been busy that morning because it was over an hour before she saw him.

He was tall with a slightly lumbering walk, though he had a sort of ease about him, as though he’d been a doctor for a long time. It made Neve feel she could trust his opinion.

“Ah, Ms Lewis” he said.

The door opened and in rushed Will, looking a little dishevelled and bleary-eyed, as though he’d stayed at the hospital all night to protect her, not trusting it to be safe enough.

The doctor looked at him.

“And you would be…”

“Will Crawford. I’m the boyfriend”.

“He’s the father of the baby” added Neve.

The doctor nodded his acknowledgement. Will sat down on the chair next to Neve’s bed and took her hand.

“I’m Doctor Wilkes. Okay, so we’ve run some tests. We’ve confirmed that you’re nine weeks along, which is nice. However we have noticed that the metabolic rate of the foetus is much higher than we would expect at this stage. It is taking a lot of oxygen from you, which is why you are feeling excessively tired and faint if you over exert yourself. In a few months, it is probably going to reach the point where it is taking more oxygen than you can afford to spare. This could bring with it a lot of complications for both you and the baby. So, the option with the least risk is to terminate the pregnancy. If you choose to proceed with it, you will be categorised as a high risk pregnancy and monitored closely throughout…”

Neve sat looking at Doctor Wilkes. She could hear him but it felt like he was very far away, as though she was under water, as though it wasn’t happening to her.

Of course, she was planning to terminate the pregnancy anyway. This would mean she didn’t have to feel guilty on Will’s behalf for choosing her career over the baby. But hearing the doctor’s words, she realised there was still a small part of her that wanted to keep it.

She knew the issues were coming from the fact that she was carrying a shifter baby. If it was going to be this difficult for her to have this particular baby, wouldn’t it mean that she and Will could never have children ever?

“Could we have a moment to discuss it?” she heard Will say. She realised she’d stopped listening to the doctor ages ago.

“Yes, of course”, said Doctor Wilkes, “Let me know if I can be of assistance”.
